The hunger games is more about youth empowerment in a desolate world of post-apocalyptic chaos that adults imposed on the world. Much like how Lord of the Flies suggests that children left unattended will revert into primitives, the hunger game explores how adults left unattended turn the world into a big mess. More fundamentally, the book series resonates with adolescents who are entering unchartered territories of adulthood, while seeking to cling onto the warmth and nostalgia that is their youth. Adults seem scary and mean, whereas adolescents have already reached the threshold where they can return back to childhood, they must now embrace fighting for their coming of age. The series will be timeless, maybe not as timeless as catcher in the rye, for teenagers worldwide because it embraces the essence of developmentally growing into an adult and the difficulties that reside in that task.

It also feels parallel to our current reality, whereas a catastrophe has happened, and the government continues to act as if they are saving the day by taking away people’s freedoms.
